#AtoZChallenge: C is for Cell Phone

Like most other kids, my two love electronics — tablets, phones, whatever they can get their grimy little hands on (and believe me, after they get their hands on said devices, there will be no doubt that “grimy” is not an exaggeration). I know some people frown and say “electronics for kids are the devil” while others have the latest and greatest device waiting on the kid before he passes through the birth canal. Whatever. I’m not going there (nor should y’all in my comments). Where I will go, however, is to the photo album on my iPhone.

Occasionally I’ll let Baby Girl hold my phone in the car, and her favorite thing to do with it is take pictures. (Her second favorite thing to do with it is turn on Itsy Bitsy Spider or an equally annoying song.) I absolutely love looking at the pictures she’s taken after I pry my phone from her peanut butter and jelly encrusted fingers. Some are random pictures of stuff in the car, but most of them are of herself.

Here is a sampling of what I get:

Rarely does she end up at our destination actually wearing her socks and shoes.

My favorites are the ones like the bottom middle, where happiness just radiates from her. (And obviously the doodle doesn’t do her justice, but you get the idea.) I once posted a picture to one of my personal social media pages where I said something to the effect of, “I hope she always looks at herself like this.” Wouldn’t that be amazing?

So, should I get the kid a selfie stick for Christmas? 😉

  3. Good stuff! Moo took lots of selfies and made a lot of videos on my phone when she was younger. Like, “Mama’s asleep, let me show you how I hold my cat,” and stuff like that. Sassy, not so much. Sissy was the first of our kids to have a cell phone and I can only imagine how many thousands of selfies she’s taken since. “Pretty. Still pretty. Yep, still pretty.” LOL
    I love what you say about BG still smiling at herself when she’s older. It’s hard to grow up and hard to watch them at times.

  5. So cute and I’d love to have had those shots from my kids except I wouldn’t let them have cell phones until they were in high school. The phones didn’t have cameras yet and even if they did I’m pretty sure in high school they wouldn’t let me see their pictures anyway. Great doodles!

    1. Haha! I didn’t get a cell phone until high school, either, but think it was my first year of college when the ones that could actually take pictures came out! I’m dating myself 😛 I imagine we’ll wait until middle school (like when they have after school activities and that sort of thing) to get one. But even then, that’ll have to be a cheapo throwaway until they show they’re responsible.

  7. My wife would disagree with me on this, but my technology is considered “sacred” and no one ever gets to use them. That currently consists of my laptop and my mobile phone. I’ve been like that for years and is the reason that I can sell a 3-4 year old device, like new, for about half what I paid for it initially.

    I’m not the norm of course, and since the daughter got a mobile phone (wifi only of course), she hasn’t even considered asking to use my phone. My wifes phone on the other hand, lets just say I’ve jackhammered some pretty nasty gunk off her phone in the past. It’s the reason it is now fully encased in an Otter Box. 🙂

    1. I get like that at first, but they wear me down. Right now I’m super possessive of my new iPad and my husband got a death stare when he picked it up a few nights ago. He is like your wife when it comes to taking care of his devices, though!

  8. Interesting question… My daughter is nearly 18 years old and I won’t let her have one. I didn’t allow her to have a phone till she 11 years old. My answer would be no, however you know your child best and whatever you decide will be in her best interests. This is a great post I love the doodles. I agree with your comment about how she looks at herself, I remember thinking the same thing when my daughter was little and she used to laugh at herself in the mirror.

    1. Oh, I have no intention of getting her a cell phone — I was just making a joke about the selfie-stick. 🙂 I agree, though, I think around middle school is a good age to consider getting one, too.

  10. KIds are amazing when it comes to using electronics. I have children in our clinic as young as 13 months flipping through YouTube searching for videos on fishing, origami folding, the strangest bunch of videos I have ever seen. And they know right where to go to find them
